Pro Bike Check: Yoann Barelli’s Giant Reign Advanced 27.5
Ready to take on the Megavalanche
Ready to take on the Megavalanche
Yoann Barelli is a French racer who rides for the Giant Factory Off Road team. He recently impressed the enduro world with a second placed finish at the Crankworx round of the 2015 Enduro World Series, by far his best result to date.
We caught up with Yoann just before he raced the Megavalanche and here is the set up he used:
Yoann rides a large Giant Reign Advanced frame. The Reign is Giant’s top of the range enduro bike so obviously his weapon of choice for the technical EWS races.
The Megavalanche was the first race that Barelli used the new RockShox Lyrik fork in. He agrees with us that it’s more of a mini Boxxer than beefed-up Pike so it makes perfect sense for the Les Duex Alpes’ most hardcore race. Barelli runs the Lyrik with two volume reducer tokens and 75 psi.
At the EWS, Barelli would switch between 34 and 36 tooth chainrings. At the Megavalanche he used a 36 because the trails are lift assisted so he can make the most of the extra power without worrying about his legs giving way.
Interestingly, Barelli does not choose to use the SRAM Roan 60 carbon wheels, instead he uses the alloy Roam 50s. This is because if he takes a large impact in the middle of a stage he would rather have a dented aluminium wheel than a broken carbon one, especially as the EWS penalises you for changing wheels.
Like most riders in our pro bike checks, Barelli has started using a bottle cage for this year. This allows him to have less weight on his back and move around more, even if it does cost him style points.
Yoann finished third at the Megavalanche so clearly this is a set up that works.
