Machined from 7000 series aluminium the Thomson is one of the best machined stems on the market and despite the old-school construction is a great stem for UK use. All the Allen bolts get a corrosion-resistant coating and the matching threaded holes in the body of the stem are anodised all the way through to prevent them binding. The ribbed surface increases fatigue life and is super durable, the gloss black anodising rarely dulls on Thomson stems.
Not the lightest or stiffest stem on test but details like the chamfered edges, precise machining, excellent finish, and plated bolts are signs of pure quality. It’s also available in a good range of sizes and is mid-priced in this company — this is one stem we actually have on our personal bikes.
