Back in the day, flanged BMX grips were made from hard plastic and they tended to rub on the inside of your hands, especially if you rode without gloves. To alleviate this chaffing a number of firms produced Donuts, neoprene collars that you butt up against the flange. They disappeared when grips started to be made from softer rubber, but gripmiester ODI has resurrected them. If you use flange grips and get friction burns they’re a must have.
