Kali is known for pioneering modern safety technologies and the Maya uses interlocking layers of conical EPS low-density foam in the liner. The company claims this dual construction spreads energy sideways away from the brain in a crash impact. Thankfully, this innovative design doesn’t interfere with the close-fitting construction and looks. The Maya features a huge peak with an integrated light/camera mount; it’s also a bendy material, so is more resilient to impacts.

There are fewer vents than most, but heat management is still adequate for a full coverage helmet — even if the fully padded forehead zone, with its built-in bug netting, does get a bit sweaty. The fit isn’t as deep as the Troy Lee A1 or iXS Trail RS lids, but the helmet feels light and quickly gets forgotten if you keep the rear pinch-together retention system well centred.

We have a couple of minor quibbles though: the chinstrap is a bit stiff and it’s much harder to adjust the retention system on the move than the turn-dial versions.
