If you like the look of these red daps the first thing to do is to try them for size because they come up small. Even the 43 we tried (this tester is 42) is tight around the toe and it’s compounded on long jaunts because of the tendency of your feet to swell during the course of a day. If, however, it’s only short XC you’re contemplating then the Elite Racer is plenty stiff with a carbon last running the length of the sole. Forward and lateral markings around the cleat box allow you to get both cleats perfectly in line and the removable studs are great for slippery hike-a-bikes. The toe area also gets a reinforced coating to resist wear should you slip on a carry. Two Velcro straps with a ‘multiple-step micrometric buckle ratchet’ batten down the hatches, and while the plastic buckle looks fragile, spares are available at £20 a pair.
Pricewise these shoes sit bang in the middle of Shimano’s £99 M225s and Nike’s £149.99 Mountain 101. Both are available in more sizes and, more importantly, a silver colour that we feel the target buyer (the privateer racer) will appreciate more than Ferrari red.
All told, a well-made and stiff race shoe, and the half size should mean you can get one that fits.
