Bontrager Race X Lite stem £49.99, Rhythm Pro bar £54.99, XXX Lite post £99.99
We’ve ignored Bontrager’s XXX Lite riser bar this time round in favour of the new Rhythm bar because, although heavier, it’s wider, has the right amount of upsweep and backsweep, and is more suitable for trail riding. The downside is that it’s a 50mm rise (more like 40mm the way Bontrager measures it) and a bit too deep for our tastes.
Better news with the Race X Lite stem. Available in dozens of configurations, including 10 lengths, two rises and two colours, it’s also cheap, which might explain why the bolts were corroding after one wet ride.
Bontrager’s new XXX Lite seatpost is a two-piece OCLV MC carbon construction and is the lightest on test. It comes in three lengths and three laybacks, and at £75 less than the Ritchey it’s also great value. The only glitch is that the one-bolt clamp is difficult to release once tightened.
You could say our cherry picking resulted in this kit being a mishmash but there is a lack of consistency in the Bontrager range. The XXX Lite post is a class
act but Bontrager needs a better quality stem and a wider/lower
carbon trail bar.
