There are three models of Perform Evo in the Scott line and they all use the same two-litre reservoir. As the size increases, so does the price. The difference between the two biggest sizes – the HY’10 and HY’16 – is only six litres, but you’re paying £30 for this extra storage. We’ve said bigger packs are a little more versatile, but in this case the price-versus-size increase just doesn’t seem worth it.

The Perform Evo HY’16 is well designed and has some sensible features, like the perforated back panel, which does wick moisture pretty well. The waist strap sits snug on the hips, offers good support and also features a couple of stuff pockets – handy for keys or a multi-tool. Inside the big main cavern is a separate sleeve for the reservoir, with hose routing out of both sides. The two-litre reservoir is actually made by Hydrapak and gets a locking cap to stop accidental leaks. There’s also a magnetic attachment for both shoulder straps to stop the hose flapping about when not in use. The bite valve has to be nipped slightly with your teeth to start the flow, but you get a decent glug of water.

The integrated front tool pocket opens wide, so you can see everything, and there are a few tags and pockets, so you can separate each tool. Twin side pockets are deep enough for bottles or kneepads, and there’s a clip for stashing an XC helmet. Hidden underneath is a handy rain cover.

The Perform Evo HY’16 feels snug, but it’s a little top-heavy and we really noticed the weight and bulk when rolling into steep descents. This is why we’d recommend the HY’10 – same reservoir, a bit less storage but £30 cheaper and a tad lower-profile.
