Keep your suspension fork feeling as good as new with this lower leg service — just don't leave it too late

In this video, we’ll talk you through a basic RockShox Pike service, so you can keep your fork feeling as good as new.

What you’ll need

  • The correct oil (RockShox 0W-30 [11.4315.021.080])
  • Shock pump
  • Suitable syringe with metric measurement increments

The RockShox Pike is still the fork to beat out there at the moment. It’s a very regular sight on UK trails. Like all forks, though, it needs fairly regular maintenance to work at its best and to prolong its lifespan.

All good-quality forks use some kind of oil in their lower legs for seal and bushing-lubricating duties and this can become dirty quite quickly in UK conditions.

Simply by replacing this oil and cleaning out any dirt we can help minimise wear and enhance the performance of any fork.

Most RockShox forks utilise a sealed damper that makes them ideal candidates for a DIY lower leg service. The most important thing is to be proactive.

Even if your fork is only a month or two old it still makes sense to perform a lower leg service as the fork will have had time to bed in and there may be particles of bushes and seals in the lubricating oil that could cause issues.

It’s not uncommon to find that forks that are under-lubricated from new, so our advice is not to wait until your fork feels rough or is weeping oil before you give it a service. It may well be too late by this point and you’ll be facing an expensive repair bill.

A lower leg service doesn’t mean that your fork won’t need a full service – we’d recommend an annual strip down by the pros as well as doing this job at home every six months.
