Rachel representing
The Independent on Sunday has named Rachel Atherton as the 23rd most influential woman in sport and the most influential female cyclist.
This was the first list compiled by the Independent on influential women in sport and features women from across the sporting spectrum.
Following her fifth consecutive win in Windham at the weekend, Rachel now has the World Cup overall sewn up with one race still to go. This was her fourth World Cup overall, she has now won over twenty world cups and two world championships.
Atherton was deemed to be more influential than some well known athletes including Claudia Fragapane, Lizzy Yarnold and fellow cyclists Sarah Storey and Laura Trott.
The list was topped by Barbara Slater, director of sport for the BBC, followed by Tracey Crouch, the sport’s minister, and Clare Balding.
The Independent said: “Atherton is funny, cool and has a strong social media following too.” Rachel will go on to finish the World Cup season at Val di Sole, Italy before attempting to wrestle back her World Championships crown in Vallnord, Andorra. In her current from, it’s difficult to see anyone stopping her.
Atherton also won the BT Sport’s Action Woman of the Year award in 2013.
