There are still five places on offer, with riders needing to raise a minimum sponsorship of £2,299 to cover costs (flights, accommodation, meals, support staff etc at approximately £999pp) as well as fund more research into treatments for paralysis.
The Morocco Cycle Challenge runs September 1-6 2009, with the organisers’ schedule as follows:
Day 1 – Fly to Marrakech, Morocco
We’ll depart from the UK on an evening flight to Morocco. You will need to be at the airport at least 3 hours before the flight time to meet the group and get checked in. Well arrive in Marrakech late in the evening and head straight for our rooms for a good night’s sleep. The flight time is about 5-6 hours.
Day 2 – The Cycling Begins!
After an early breakfast and a challenge briefing, we’ll have a bike fitting before making the transfer up to the Tichka pass, where our challenge begins. We have the rest of the day to cycle through the stunning Atlas Mountains, which will provide an incredible backdrop to our first day. After 90K we’ll arrive in Ouarzazate (pronounced ‘a-war-za-zat’) where we’ll check into our hotel for the night. There may even be time to discover a little of this fascinating city.
Day 3 – Ouarzazate to Agdz Tansikht.
Today we’ll tackle the longest stage of our ride, which covers approximately 98K and includes some hills. As we leave Ourazazate, the traffic becomes lighter and we make our way through the the hills to reach our hotel in Agdz Tansikht (pronounced ‘ag-z tan-sikt’) in time for a traditional Moroccan dinner.
Day 4 – Agdz Tansikht to Zagora
On our final day of cycling, we’ll experience a real treat as we leave Agdz Tansikht and head for the beautiful Draa Valley. The roads are lined with date palms and we’ll also pass traditional red clay villages and fortress ruins. We’ll cycle for 70K today and as we approach our destination of Zagora, the landscape becomes more desert like and we may even spot a camel or two! Tonight, to celebrate our arrival and commemorate our cycling achievements, the team will enjoy a gala dinner together and the chance to relax and unwind.
Day 5 – Transfer to Marrakech
After breakfast, we will transfer back to Marrakech. With it’s stunning back drop of snow capped peaks, we will have some free time to explore this vibrant city with it’s buzzing markets and food stalls known as ‘souks’ or to simply relax and have a well deserved rest! We will spend the night in a hotel in Marrakech and you are free to spend the evening as you choose.
Day 6 – Return to the UK
This morning we will make the transfer to the airport for our flight back to the UK.
