Kask are a relatively new name in the world of mountain biking but they’ve been providing big roadie racers – like Team Sky – with lids for quite a while and getting rave reviews. The Rex is their first stab at a mountain bike enduro-style helmet and they’ve done a great job we reckon. It’s more vented than a lot of enduro helmets but still offers loads of bonce coverage, fit fine-tuning and goggle friendliness.

You can never have too many jackets. While it might seem lightweight stow-away jackets like this are the exclusive preserve of roadies, they are something that every mountain biker should have in the armoury as well. Use it in spring and autumn when the sun is hiding and the temperature drops. use it in summer for summer showers. Use it in winter as an emergency additional jacket to supplement another jacket that has perhaps wetted-out and causing you chills.

Wind is the killer of cyclists. Well, not literally perhaps but wind is the weather that all cyclists do battle with. Mountain bikers hate wind more than we hate rain. Rain can be fun. Wind is just slow, cold and rubbish. Waterproof shorts are something of an established item in the UK but Windstopper shorts are a new thang. They make sense. Comfier to wear than flappy, cold waterproof shorts. More breathable too.

If you have an enduro helmet then you simply must have enduro footwear, dahling. These are a great option. A rubberised toe box protects against all but the biggest rock impacts. A generous flap over the quick lace system keeps things clean for easier removal at the end of a gritty day. We particularly like the short Neoprene cuff round the ankle, well placed to stop heather or stones from sneaking in to irritate your feet, but small enough not to generate heat or snag on clothing.
