Calderdale is one of those places that seems to have more than its fair share of good mtb trails. The dale itself is steep-sided and deep, and dotted with small towns like Hebden Bridge and Todmorden — remnants of a once thriving textile industry. But it’s the moors that hover above the valley floor that really catch the eye, especially those to the north of it, which are rolling and open, and crossed by a real pot-pourri of excellent tracks.
There are plenty of options for classic rides in this part of the world, but the one that stands out is a loop that links Hebden Bridge and Todmorden, via a tortuous route over those northern moors, returning along the southern flanks of the Dale, beneath the imposing monument of Stoodley Pike. At over 38km in length, and with more than 1,200m of climbing, it’s no walk in the park; but the rewards more than outweigh the effort required, with some fine and very varied riding on a selection of wonderful trails among some fine scenery.
