A mountain bike saddle differs from other types of saddle (for example, a road bike saddle) in a few crucial ways. Mountain bike saddles are typically flatter across the top, and some even flare up at the tail. Most are also built with reinforced panelling to protect from the wear and tear of dirt riding.
We all have different body shapes and bike set-ups – subtle changes in saddle position and angle can have a massive effect on comfort. However, we do believe some saddles are inherently more comfortable than others.
WTB Volt Saddle
Classic All-Rounder
Price: $36
The weight is just about competitive on the Cro-Mo railed model, but lighter versions are available, one even boasting a carbon chassis. Widths range from 135mm at the narrowest end (opt for the 142mm version if in doubt) up to the positively sofa-like 150mm option. Whatever width you choose, the Volt feels more deeply padded than the scales suggest and is a tough, no-nonsense product that we love.
Buy NowFizik Monte Saddle
Best XC Racing Saddle
Price: $81
Compared to previous Fizik saddles, which always seemed too flat, or had a ridge down the centre, the new Monte has a hammock-like profile that slumps more in the middle. We find this shape a lot more comfortable, because you sit into, rather than on, the saddle. You also move around a lot less, even when the saddle is wet or covered in mud.
Buy NowPRO Turnix Saddle
Best Trail Riding Saddle
Price: $88
Being quite a neutral shape, the Turnix is an easy saddle to navigate, allowing you to adapt your body position quickly to suit any riding scenario. It does get a little slippery when it’s raining, but when sitting further back the rubberised side panels create a little more grip; reassuring when descending off the back.
Buy NowSQlab 611 Active Saddle
Best Enduro Saddle
Price: $169
The SQ-Lab 611 saddle features a very wide and flat rear section that’s designed to offer more support and optimal pressure distribution for your sit bones. The rear end has a distinctive lip to it, and this works wonders at keeping you in the right position on steep climbs. It’s supportive without being cumbersome or harsh. Quality this high is worth the price tag.
Buy NowErgon SM Sport Saddle
Best High-Mileage Saddle
Price: $70
The e-bike-friendly SM saddle's broad shape is flatter than average, with a relatively thin mid-zone padding that feels way softer than it looks. In fact, together with the deeper channel along the centre, the SM rides cushy and plush. The shell is Y-shaped - to encourage inward flex - and the padding is placed directly under the sit bones to better support rider loads.
