Lighter weight short suited to cross country and trail riding
Pearl Izumi Divide short review
Pearl Izumi has a range of clothing under the Divide label. Aimed more at exploring the trails and days in the saddle rather than shredding the DH track, they feature a more pared back, lighter weight construction. The Pearl Izumi Divide short features a shorter cut than shorts intended to be used in conjunction with knee pads, perfect for catching the rays and limiting pedalling restrictions.
Construction
Crafted from Pearl Izumi’s polyester based Transfer fabric, it features a tapered leg cut (to prevent billowing in the wind). There’s also a comfortable, padded waistband. Twin velcro adjusters are situated on the inside of the waistband to tailor the fit. These add to the Divide’s clean silhouette but they are more fiddly to adjust than external versions. The light and stretchy fabric makes pedalling in the Divide a dream.

Problem pockets
Twin pockets are situated in a mid-thigh position. This location makes the carrying of anything heavier than a gel or a ten pound note mildly irritating. Banging the legs with every pedal stroke, heavier items also shift the short material around. This movement sees you constantly having to adjust their position, not ideal. This isn’t a criticism aimed solely at the Divide – several manufacturers continue to position pockets in the same way – and if you carry a pack or let your bike do the heavy lifting, it’s less likely to affect you.
The other pocket, positioned at the small of the back, is perfect for carrying your keys or phone.
Pearl Izumi currently only produce the Divide in the colour scheme shown, great if you like green.
Verdict
As a general trail short the Divide's cut and fabric choice work well for warm weather riding. Unfortunately, a couple of design flaws really stop it from being a top option for the summer.
