Altura Five 40 Waterproof shorts review
Altura have a reputation for making solidly performing clothing, aimed squarely at the UK based rider. The Altura Five 40 provides 100% waterproof properties in a short that fits neatly between a lightweight trail short and waterproof ‘over-short’.

Altura Five 40 shorts
Altura’s Shield textile is noticeably thicker than some waterproof materials. This provides robust protection against the inevitable spills without the fear of tearing delicate fabrics.
Altura triple stitch and tape the seams to maximise durability and provide proper waterproofing. Crashes and branch/bramble snags have yet to cause any damage.
Altura employ their ErgoFit 3D patterning to build the Five/40 with a cut that works well when riding hard. Smaller panels of stretchier material are found across the back and thighs allowing the Five/40 to follow movement properly.
The cut is generous enough to minimise restrictions in movement but manages to eliminate any potential saddle hookups. Twin poppers and zip hold the shorts in place, adjustments to fit are taken care of by the elasticated side straps.
Altura use proper ‘British’ sizing; this does mean that compared to European or US companies the Five/40 short does come up a little generous. I had to go down a size compared to other brands. If in doubt, check their website for sizing info.
Apart from the ever-present crinkly rustling of the waterproof material, the Five/40 is a pair of shorts that you can happily wear even when it isn’t raining. They feel and act more like a normal pair of trail shorts, just with the added benefit of the waterproofing.
The slightly brushed inner surface of the shell material is pleasantly comfortable against the skin, even without a liner.
The breathability of Altura’s Shield proprietary material and the shorter length cut really goes some way to minimising the typical boil in the bag effect when riding in waterproof kit.
Two zipped front pockets add to the Five/40’s practicality for this time of year, especially with puddles everywhere, the Five/40s protect your backside from the inevitable soaking. This makes them the shorts I reach for, before any other pair.
Verdict
The Five/40 is a versatile 3-season short, comfortable to use for more than just wet weather riding.
