With a low (30mm) stack height, the Stubbing could prove useful to keep handlebars low on a taller-wheeled 29er, or smaller frame, or if you’ve made an error of judgement and simply cut your fork steerer too short.

The overall finish is decent, but there was a minor mismatch in colour between the faceplate and the main stem body on our test model.

The stem is forged into shape from quality 7075 aluminium, and is one of several where the faceplate (handlebar retaining straps in this case) fastens hard onto the body, leaving no gap.

This design helps align the two separate clamps properly, ensures even tension and spreads out clamping loads.

As well as being low profile, Ragley’s stem is also thin across the body, with the bar clamp area up to 30 per cent narrower than some.

This smaller size doesn’t result in a below average weight, but there’s a less solid, direct feel at the bars and the construction quality is a little less precise.

We had no issues keeping bars straight and twist-free throughout testing, though, and the price is excellent.
