Gore has a well-founded reputation for excellent durability and quality, but until the new Power Trail short was released I never quite got on with its baggies — too short, too skinny and too much like commuter-wear for my tastes.

The Power changes all that — the first short from Gore that’s long enough for proper trail riding, combined with a super-lightweight fabric and slim cut that’s excellent for warm weather days.

The clever thing is, the short is only longer at the front. The fabric arcs down to cover the knees when you’re sat or stood on the bike — this makes it extremely comfortable, because there’s never any bunched-up fabric behind your knees. The longer fronts slip silkily over your knees or pads too, thanks to a satin-like strip on the inside.

The multi-panel design of the Power stretches in all the right places, and the material is just heavy enough to resist riding up your leg when you’re going fast.

Features are excellent too, as you’d expect for a £130 short, with double-stitched seams, a good Gore liner, big thigh pockets with rubber-ended zips to help wet hands, double popper front closure and a quality Velcro-adjusted waistband.

A great short then, but the sky-high price means it can’t get top marks even with the excellent liner included. Search online though and you’ll probably find it for much less than that.
