It looks like Britain’s first mountain bike stage race was only a short-lived experiment as it has been announced that 2016’s Epic Cymru has been cancelled with no plans to bring it back in the future.

A statement from Epic Cymru reads: “It is with regret that we announced on March 4^th that Epic Cymru was cancelled indefinitely. We would like to apologise to everyone who had entered the 2016 event, all of whom are being refunded in full.”

Unfortunately it seems that there was not a massive uptake of entries this year and the event was simply not financially viable: “The event has been cancelled due to having lower number of pre-entered riders than required. We were not able to cut costs and did not want to change the quality or type of event we offered, so felt there was no other option but to cancel.”

Entrants were also told to expect an email last Monday that would answer any queries they had regarding the cancellation of the event.

Epic Cymru ran for the first time last year and offered a mix of enduro and cross country style racing. Despite being five days long it was well attended and received rave reviews (including one in our own mag).

Plans were well underway for the 2016 instalment and a number of entries had already been sold but unfortunately it was not enough to keep the pioneering event going.
