Kask may not be a brand you’re familiar with if you see roads as simply a way to drive your bike to your local trails. However, if you fraternise with our skinny-wheeled brethren, then it will no doubt be a brand with products on your wishlist.

Kask is a helmet manufacturer and current supplier to Chris Froome’s Sky Team, as such it probably knows a thing or two about aerodynamics and venting.

That’s why we’re intrigued by its new helmet, the Rex. Kask has previously made an XC helmet, but this is its first foray into the trail and enduro arena. You would think it’s a bold step from a brand far more associated with road riding, but Kask does also make climbing and skiing helmets, so it knows a thing or two about rugged protection.

The fact that immediately caught our attention was its weight –  just 290 grams. Most trail helmets will weigh between 330 and 380 grams so this puts it way below the lighter end of that spectrum. In fact, in our recent helmet grouptest only the Giro Feature could match this and that scored a respectable eight.

The Kask Rex also has 20 cooling vents that apparently work best at slower speeds and in warmer climates. These are complimented by “temperature management technologies” that we assume are to do with the padding within the helmet.

The back of the helmet features a clip to stop your goggles from slipping down on rough terrain. This is a feature we’ve seen on other helmets and always one we’re grateful for.

The helmet will be available in four colours including a Team Sky blue and black, green, red and white.

The helmet is on sale now but all the tech will set you back an eye-watering £150 (50 per cent more than our test winning Bell Super 2.0).
