This month’s Killer starts with a chalky clamber to the hallowed Anglo Saxon fortress of Cissbury Ring. After dissecting the grassy ramparts of the hill fort the grand loop heads up Lychpole Hill before cutting northbound to the South Downs Way, or SDW for those in the know. From this fairly mellow, ridged backbone, extensions to the circuit drop steeply off the ridge before the inevitable grind back up. Starting with a diversion around the wooded edge of Steyning Bowl, a leg on the Downs carries you to an eroded woodland plummet from Chanctonbury Ring. A granny bash back up and it’s a ridgeline run west, crossing the busy A24 to another precipitous descent off and back up Kithurst Hill. Doubling back east at Amberley Mount, field edging cut throughs then an ascent up Wepham Down takes the route on to woodland at Michelgrove before utilising the Monarch Way to cross the A280 and A24 back to the Cissbury kick off. A classic SDW Killer.
