By using compression collars like those found in standard plumbing fittings, Bontrager has hit upon a simple but ingenious lock-on grip. Two large alloy collars screw onto the plastic grip body, using the spanner provided. This compresses the ‘cones’ and secures the grips to the bar. It’s that simple. The design doesn’t scratch or damage handlebars, so it’s carbon friendly, and there are no small bolts to lose or round out. It all sounds too good to be true — and it is. The rubber covering the hard plastic inner sleeve is too thin and does not offer enough cushioning. Also, if you hold your grips at either extreme, the hard plastic inner that supports the small flange sits proud of the rubber and is particularly uncomfortable. It’s not all bad news, though, as Bontrager has other grips in the pipeline using the same system but with different profiles. A great idea, but Bontrager still has some way
